Kailani | Luxury Seafront Cottage | Mousehole, Cornwall

Kailani

Mousehole, Cornwall, UK

It’s all mackerel greys and storm-cloud blues, folded linens and timeworn maps; an extension of the village’s tangible spirit behind sash windows and whitewashed walls. For Kailani is Mousehole in miniature, where the waves drum alongside the hot tub's gurgle and maritime trinkets found buried in sand glimmer on shelves. While the cobbles pay homage to buckets and spades, serenity ensues in this luxury Cornish cottage-come-ship-bow.

Book

Introduction

Through helter-skelter lanes, beneath rainbow lanterns strung along the harbour wall and past granite cottages with tiny fisher-folk doors, Kailani sits against the sea at the outer reaches of the village. A luxury home of two hearts; one of storm watching from the main bedroom - nothing to do but weather it out with each another, the other of racing toy cars across floorboards and bedtime stories in the eaves - the swell an infinite lullaby as grownups sip G&Ts by the fire. The thickly etched history of this far-flung community can be found in every brass fitting and salvaged buoy. This is Cornish klys at its best.

Inside

Muted shades perform as a canvas for the sky and all its moods to flood through the house; window seats as attuned to sunrise coffees as they are to counting lightning strikes. There's nothing bijou about this coastal cottage. Spanning three floors, it's the light-filled, studio-esque sitting room that is standalone; to which you'll gravitate after well-rested slumbers and breakfasts spent seal watching. If Kailani were a couple, they’d be an artist and a piscator; one’s work relics the other’s treasure, one’s vocation, the other’s muse. Scavenged tackle in every nook, the Rebis of seafaring lore.

Outside

With a garden for stargazing and dreaming of tobacco smugglers, and another for whispers; two al fresco spaces serve this littoral home. At this retreat designed for soul soothing, coffee mornings are spent seafront, with plein air eves hot tub bathing amidst the cobbled walls of your private courtyard. Beyond the boundaries, you'll discover seafood bars and artisanal bakeries, an outdoor theatre and farm shops. With the coast path leading out from the cottage door, this is a walker's haven. Head to Penzance, with its art deco lido and promenade in one direction, Lamorna and its mermaids, the other.

From the owner

“With a restful stay at heart, Kailani is a tonic for the soul. With an unobstructed sea view, many a day can be spent watching the ever-changing vista.”

From the owner

We find ourselves feeling restored and rejuvenated after a stay at Kailani. Whether bird watching or seal spotting, the cottage enjoys a stunning, unobstructed panorama. From the terrace, sea birds are in abundance and we have regularly seen porpoises, seals and occasionally dolphins playing just yards away.

Our favourite part of Cornwall, Mousehole is a joy to visit whatever the season; with its peaceable nature during winter months and the vibrancy it exudes during the peak of summer, when its inimitable allure sees many exploring its well-trodden streets. With St Clement's Isle in the foreground and the stunning silhouette of St Michael's Mount beyond, Mount's Bay itself is a hive of activity, as popular with kayakers and paddle boarders as it is fishing boats.

We have restored the cottage to ensure that its traditional roots are best-showcased, while enhancing with additions such as the beautiful hand-made George Robinson kitchen and the Jøtul woodburning stove. We have curated nautical finds to showcase throughout the cottage to afford an authenticity that reflects the history and setting.
